The Rose of Versailles is a manga written by Riyoko Ikeda. It was made into an anime in 1979. Both were huge successes. The story has everything to please. The last heir of a close guard of Louis the fourteenth, being again a girl, her father choses to train her as his successor. She will be transvestite all of her life and raised as a boy. She becomes Marie Antoinette personal bodyguard. Intrigue, power, money, sex, Versailles, forbidden love, fights, there's everything to make it a huge hit. A movie was made by Jacques Demy in 1979, but it was a total dud. He accentuated too much the kitschy side, while there is a real grandeur of feelings in this story.
The anime/books series should definitely become a movie starring actors, giving back its success to the original manga, but in a cinema style, adapted to what is best done today. The one that would attack this big initiative would also find special challenge in adapting the anime style of filming into a movie, with monochromatic slides and epic music. PLEASE SOMEBODY SEE THE INTEREST OF THIS IDEA ! I have no idea if this will ever be read though...
