Manually Controlled Variable Speed And Torque Drill
Dewalt Product Improvement IdeaSubmitted 7 years ago
When I was in the Army, I was to make a simple sign with our unit logo. I had a 4 tool cordless kit for about 4 years with light use. It included a light, circular saw, drill, and reciprocating saw but when using the circular saw on a full charge I got 12 maybe 14 inches before it wasn't effective anymore so 8 more hours on the charger it went. I was cutting just a piece of 3/4" Pine plywood. I went to sears, and they tried to sell me a new battery for $90. It would have worked, but I ended up buying a Circular Saw with a cord for $45. I've since replaced the reciprocating saw, and the drill with the corded drill with variable speed control, but soon realized it is annoying to use.
My idea has all the features, except the obvious portability factor since it would need 120V AC power, that a cordless drill does but with a cord and therefore does not require a battery the features that I am specifically looking for are:
2 speed gearbox
Featuring a 18-26 position clutch
Integrated LED to illuminate work
Keyless Chuck
The problem with a variable speed trigger, which is the only variable speed available currently by you, or any brand in regards to corded drills, is that if the screw or drill bit is not moving, you squeeze the trigger more. If the screw or drill has hit a rough spot you squeeze the trigger more, resulting in tool twisting out of control or stripping the screw head, or the drill bit slipping and getting stuck.
My father recently had rotator cuff surgery, and the doctor said a contributing factor was the jerking motion where a tool would move and screw or drill bit wouldn't when working above head. I have also known a couple of other tradesmen with similar experiences.
Also, I prefer to not have a lock on switch on a drill, it only works when at full speed and if you need to use a drill for more than a few minutes continuously, you need to re-evaluate your choice of tools for the job you want completed.
