Fast Recharging
Toyota Product Improvement IdeaSubmitted 2 years ago
Hello.
The idea of fully electric cars is a very exciting concept.
When asked would I swap my petrol car for a fully electric vehicle the answer is YES provided it can do what my current vehicle can do
namely:
1. Give me a range of 300 miles per charge.
2. Be fully recharged in 3 mins (the time it takes for me to fill my tank)
1. Is achievable now with the current generation of batteries.
2. IS NOT.
This is because batteries need a long time to fully recharge as we know.
Also the idea of every car driver having to hook up every night is not feasible.
The problem is we need to replicate what we have at the moment with our car infrastructure because it works.
No one is expected to go home every night and drip feed petrol/diesel into their cars for 24 hours.
So I feel we should think outside the box and instead of building cars with permanent battery packs why not design cars with replacement batteries.
So we build cars with a generic space under the floor and create service stations that simply replace the exhausted battery pack with a charged one.
You pay for a fully charged pack and this is automatically replaced in one side as it pushes the spent one out of the other side to be recharged.
This whole procedure would take no longer than filling up a fuel tank.
Standardising battery spaces why not after all we have standardised fuel filler caps.
It does need a lot of thinking about but I feel this is the direction we should be going.
Please find attached my ideas in illustration.
