Noise Reduction Audio

After recently being troubled by my noise reduced headphones not having batteries working. I thought, well my phone always has power when I'm listening to music (obviously) why can't we use the microphone on my phone to play the inverse of the sound wave - what noise reduction headphones do - and play that down my headphones. Boom, turn any pair of headphones into noise cancelling headphones. Sure it may use extra power, but saves me buying new batteries!
