High Capacity Replacement Battery Packs For Electric Vehicles

Hyundai Product Improvement Idea

Submitted 6 years ago

The EV industry needs a plug and play, OE grade, battery upgrade capability for older EVs that can be purchased through an automaker or large part supplier, installed by service techs at the brand respective service centers, and supported 12-24 months after installation.

It is similar to buying a more powerful small block V8 for an older Chevy from GM Performance Parts only this would be battery packs. For example, I own a 2014 Spark EV with a 19 ish kWH battery pack good for 82 miles. I want more range...as does every single EV owner that I know. There needs to be a way for me to purchase a battery pack that plugs up and operates normally only it has more capacity...say 25 kWH or even 30 kWH possibly using solid state battery technology to lower weight and size. I would pay up to $5,000 or for such capacity. In turn, the company would get the old battery pack returned (the core) and can be repurposed as a future high capacity battery replacement, a battery for home use, or even grid stabilizers.

I do not have the capital, the business acumen, or the time with my new small family to start a business that can provide these high capacity battery replacements. I have been part of many focus groups and have pitched this idea as a possible future cottage industry that would improve the adoption rates of EV ownership but what is really needed is an established company to get involved.

I am willing to talk to anyone about this because I am sure this idea has merit. This idea would definitely make EV ownership more attractive, increase revenue streams, recycle old battery packs, and allow owners buying a second or third hand EVs the ability to improve their car's range at a favorable price point. This could be the next big industry and could end up being the EV equivalent of Edelbrock.
