Reinvention Of The Kitchen Extractor Fan

In keeping with the Dyson hoover improvements it is apparent to me that something similar would work with an extractor fan. The current fans draw dirty air towards them and subsequently clog up. Surely if the fan was separated from the chimney and drew in clean air, which pushed the clean air via jets directly up into the chimney over the source of the dirty air, usually a hob, then the efficiency of the fan would be increased and the only piece of the mechanism to come into contact with the dirty air would be the chimney?
