Have a portal pad that allows you to change the element of your skylander once that elemental realm has been opened. You could have a new group of core skylanders and crystal versions of the classics (Spyro, Stealth Elf, Chop Chop or Hex, Trigger Happy, Gill Grunt, Eruptor, Terrafin, and Whirlwind) that can be attuned to any element and glow that color (with a clear top allowing for colored light in the middle. It could even have a dial as the base that turned around the portal. This would allow the characters to change skins and elemental attacks and get more gameplay out of each character.
